Linville Gorge Fire Triples In Size   Leave a comment

Considering the fact that I live about 15, 20 minutes or so to the southeast of Linville Gorge, this is kinda of a big deal…from the Citizen-Times:

MORGANTON — Firefighters continued today battling a wildfire in the Linville Gorge Wilderness that has more than tripled in size since Wednesday.

The blaze now covers an estimated 366 acres around Table Rock in the Grandfather Ranger District in Burke County, said Deborah Walker, spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.

Westerly winds have pushed the fire to the east, she said.

The number of firefighters on the scene has grown to around 100. Walker said crews spent much of the day Wednesday cutting containment lines, and today plan to light backfires.

“What the plan is today is we’re going to use our crews and our helicopters to fire out the area from the line to the active fire,” she said. “It removes the fuel between the containment lines and the fire.

“That stops the fire’s progression and allows resources to get in and take care of any hot spot areas and do so in a safe manner. Today’s operation will be focused on the burnout. Folks will see a lot more smoke in the air today.”

From where I live in western Burke County, I can see the smoke from Linville Gorge rising off in the distance, taking an easterly jaunt given the prevailing winds in this part of the state. The good news, thankfully, is that this fire appears to be contained for now, though from what I’ve heard from friends in both the local fire departments and U.S. Forest Service, it’ll still be some time before this fire is finally put to rest.
