Montana Lt.Gov. Officially Appointed To Replace Outgoing Senator   Leave a comment

Regardless of whatever happens come November 2014, outgoing Lt.Gov. John Walsh will be one of the state’s two U.S. Senators:

Gov. Steve Bullock appointed his former running mate to fill the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Max Baucus, who is leaving the Senate early after being confirmed Thursday as ambassador to China.

Walsh was already running for the seat, but he’ll now run as the incumbent senator. That change could provide some inherent advantages in his quest to hold one of the party’s most vulnerable seats.

“I wanted to appoint someone who I truly believed would wake up each and every day wanting to put Montana and Montanans first,” Bullock said in a Friday news conference to announce the appointment.(Roll Call)

Booman Tribune has his own take on this appointment, which is well worth looking at…my opinion on Walsh’s appointment is that this should move the race from a slightly (if that..) Republican lean squarely into the tossup column.

Why? Regardless of what you may think about incumbency in this day-and-age, having an incumbent senator running to hold onto a seat is a better play for the political money-handlers to fall behind and support rather than had Max Baucus, who was recently confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to China and will be leaving the Senate shortly, remained in the Senate to serve out the last year of his final term in the Senate.

By going ahead and appointing Walsh to the seat now, it gives the DSCC and the Democratic Party leaders a chance to shore up what some had been calling a potential Republican pickup. Of course, being nine months out from election night, anything can happen; for now, this race should still be considered a straight tossup.
