This past September was the warmest since records began in 1880, according to new data released by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).

The announcement continues a trend of record or near-record breaking months, including May and August of this year, and puts 2014 on track to be the hottest year on record.

September saw global surface temperatures that were 0.77 C hotter than the 20th century average. This record beats out 2005 by a rather strong 0.04 C margin. In the U.S., temperatures were unusually hot in the West, and just “normal” or very close to the 1951-1980 average in the East, as this NASA chart shows:
