Well, there goes that nascent presidential campaign…
A grand jury indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday for abusing the powers of his office by carrying out a threat to veto funding for state prosecutors investigating public corruption — making the possible 2016 presidential hopeful his state’s first indicted governor in nearly a century.
A special prosecutor spent months calling witnesses and presenting evidence that Perry broke the law when he promised publicly to nix $7.5 million over two years for the public integrity unit, which is run by Travis County District Rosemary Lehmberg’s office. Several top aides to the Republican governor appeared before grand jurors in Austin, including his deputy chief of staff, legislative director and general counsel. Perry himself wasn’t called to testify.(Washington Post via Crooks & Liars)
2 thoughts here: (1)this should be a lesson to public officials that you should never threaten defunding the offices of those tasked with investigating public corruption..and (2)watch how fast the Right sweeps this under-the-rug – or worse – lets Rick Perry wear this as a badge of honor.
You remember Rick Santelli? He’s the sonuvabitch who basically got the Tea Party rolling after a particularly odious rant on the floor of the Mercantile Exchange in Chicago back in 2009…well, Monday he had another one of those odious rants, only this time CNBC anchor Steve Liesman called Santelli out on the air following Santelli’s rant, telling Santelli that “no piece of advice Santelli’s ever given on-air has ever worked”.
My question here is this: when Wall Street starts up on Tuesday, who do you think is going to have been shown their walking papers at CNBC – Santelli or Liesman? In the real world, it would likely be Santelli..unfortunately, as long as that odious runt’s been around, what d’ya think the odds are of that happening?
Oh, the schadenfreude is thick here, isn’t it?
[Philadelphia] police are asking for the public’s help tracking down the second suspect responsible for robbing gun range customers of at least nine weapons and shooting a 67-year-old man.
Authorities identified the missing robber as 27-year-old Jeffrey Chandler.
Officials say Chandler, who stands 5-feet 10-inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds, has numerous tattoos on both arms. The most distinctive tattoo is the word – “Stretch” – located on his right hand, they say.
Investigators say Chandler fired the shot that wounded one of the victims.
Chandler’s alleged accompolice, 21-year-old Samiyyah Poteat turned herself in to authorities on June 13 after seeing herself in surveillance video of the crimes.
She faces multiple charges including attempted homicide, robbery and aggravated assault.(NBC Philadelphia)
Normally, I don’t make fun of crime victims – God knows they’ve been through enough – but this is an exception to that rule…maybe someone should ask Wayne LaPierre, ‘where were all the good guys with guns, ya’ sonuvabitch?‘
H/T to Crooks & Liars & NBC Philadelphia
…one suspects, if someone were to look at Eric Cantor’s back at any time today, one might find all the knives his constituents stabbed into him vis-a-vis Tuesday’s primary…couldn’t happen to a nicer fellow. *whistles innocently*
*checks calendar to make sure its’ still 2014* Even a broken clock is right on occasion…
The NRA writes, “Texas, independent-minded and liberty-loving place that it is, doesn’t ban the carrying of loaded long guns in public, nor does it require a permit for this activity. Yet some so-called firearm advocates seem determined to change this.”
The organization continues, “Yet while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms.”
It’s actually intimidating.(Freak Out Nation via. Crooks & Liars)
I don’t know what’s weirder: the fact that I actually find myself in agreement with the NRA on something…or that I can’t help but laugh at the schadenfreude they’re now facing from those weird open carry groups…bring the popcorn!
Oh, this should go well…apparently, one conservative source of bullshit isn’t enough for the fevered swamps of the right:
Fox’s monopoly on conservative cable news may soon come to an end.
A Bloomberg Businessweek profile published Thursday revealed Newsmax.com founder and CEO Christopher Ruddy’s plans to expand beyond his highly-trafficked website and influential magazine into television with a 24-hour cable news channel called NewsmaxTV — described as a “kinder, gentler Fox” — launching as early as June.
“Our goal is to be a little more boomer-oriented, more information-based rather than being vituperative and polarizing,” Ruddy told the magazine.
Newsmax.com already broadcasts NewsmaxTV segments online for three hours a day, featuring interviews conducted by conservative radio host Steve Malzberg. But Ruddy sees an opening in the cable news market for a conservative audience that feels Fox has turned too far to the right.
“If we take 10 to 15 percent of the Fox audience, and they are making $1 billion a year, then we are going to be hugely profitable,” he told Bloomberg.(Talking Points Memo via Daily Kos)
For years, back when I was, to quote a friend of mine, “a dirty, stinking, hippie conservative”, there was some sense (from me, at least) that the Media Research Center’s Brent Bozell was no more than a grifting, sycophantic hypocrite…now we know:
Brent Bozell, the head honcho at MRC, has been on Fox News for years and years deriding a lazy, liberal press that never does its job and always bashes conservatives. He’s one of the top rightwing resentment pundits and has made a good living off of it. But they’ve also done some very sketchy things at the MRC.
A while back, their website was down for a few days and they said they were hacked, but I know from an anonymous source that they changed webmasters and all their data got lost because of it and instead of being honest, they made up a fictitious story to cover up their homemade chaos.(Crooks & Liars)
Yeah…right. And George W. Bush never ever touched a drop of the grape either, huh?
Now we learn from Romenesko that Brent Bozell never wrote any of his own syndicated columns.
Here’s the link to the Romenesko article but put simply, Brent Bozell is just another conservative grifter out to con the average person out of their peonic wages just because he can..in other words, what a mf’n hypocrite.
